MessageToEagle.com - While drilling into the thick ice of Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf, scientists came across something that came as a chock.

About 600 feet beneath the ice, where no-one thought it was possible for any kind of higher life-forms to exist, something was living there...

This is the first time such a sophisticated life-form has been discovered in this type of subglacial environment.

"It was swimming around, being very curious, just looking at the cable and we were all huddled around the monitor just fascinated with what we were seeing at the bottom of our hole, " said Robert Bindschadler at NASA.

Puzzled scientists encountered this creature beneath the thick ice of Antarctica. This was quite a surprise!

This shocking discovery has made scientists consider that there could be many more advanced life-forms living in extreme environments.

No doubt the shrimp was just as surprised by the encounter as the research team.

"I'm sure this day was a very interesting day in the life of the creature, as it was for us," Bindschadler said.

Most of Antarctica remain unexplored and no-one knows what is hidden below this 2.5 mile thick icy terrain.

We can most likely expect more surprises in the near future.

Antarctic Ice Shelves Breaking Up Fast

The floating ice shelves of a critical portion of West Antarctica are steadily losing their grip on adjacent bay walls, potentially amplifying an already accelerating loss of ice to the sea. A new study based on 40 years of satellite imagery of the floating ice shelves in the eastern Amundsen Sea Embayment, West Antarctica reveals that their margins, where they grip onto rocky bay walls or slower ice masses, are fracturing and retreating inland.
