Earth’s Magnetic Field Is Weakening Much Faster Than Expected

Eddie Gonzales Jr. – MessageToEagle.com – Earth’s magnetic field protects our planet from dangerous ultraviolet radiation. Scientists monitor the Sun’s activity because big solar flares could be very harmful to us.

At the same time, it’s important to observe any changes in the magnetic fields, because there would be no life on Earth without it.

Earth’s Magnetic Field Is Weakening Much Faster Than Expected

According to recent studies, it seems the magnetic field is weakening much faster than expected.

Journalist Michael Snyder has written that “previously, scientists had told us that the magnetic field was weakening by about 5 percent every 100 years.

But now we are being told that data collected from the SWARM satellite indicate that the rate of decay is now 5 percent per decade.

It’s well established that in modern times, the axial dipole component of Earth’s main magnetic field is decreasing by approximately 5% per century. Recently, scientists using the SWARM satellite announced that their data indicate a decay rate ten times faster, or 5% per decade.

In case you didn’t quite get that, 5 percent per decade is 10 times faster than 5 percent per century.

If the rate of decay continues at this pace, or if it speeds up even more, we could be looking at a mass extinction event that is beyond what most people would dare to imagine.”

In his article, citing several science source, Snyder explains some scientists think “our magnetic field “could be gone in as little as 500 years.”

According to Sputnik, “science commentator and award-winning science fiction author C Stuart Hardwick explained the strength of Earth’s main magnetic field, which stands at about 29.5 microteslas (the unit measuring a magnetic field) has dropped by 5 microteslas, or some 14 percent, from a strength of nearly 35 microteslas in the year 1700.

At the same time, Hardwick noted, precision measurements by the SWARM satellites have shown the magnetic field to have weakened by some 3.5 percent in high latitudes over North America while strengthening by 2 percent over Asia during two and a half years of observation.

Downplaying public fears, the commentator suggested that a collapse of the magnetic field, set to occur within the next two thousand years,  has already “happened hundreds of times before,” with “no evidence that it has caused a mass extinction or even a noticeable disruption to life on Earth.”

Snyder does not see the scenario in bright colors. He says we’re already noticing visible signs of a coming pole flip. “Everybody agrees on is that the magnetic north pole is moving toward Russia at an accelerating pace…

Solar flares can be very powerful. Our planet is very small compared to large solar flares.

Solar flares can be very powerful. Our planet is very small compared to large solar flares.

But what’s really catching attention is the acceleration in movement. Around the mid-1990sthe pole suddenly sped up its movements from just over 9 miles (15 kilometers) a year to 34 miles (55 kilometers) annually. As of last year, the pole careened over the international date line toward the Eastern Hemisphere,” Snyder writes.

As Sputnik reports, Snyder also says the weakening magnetic field can lead to “rising cancer rates, billions or even trillions of dollars in damage to man-made spacecraft and power grids, and, if worst comes to worst, bombardment by cosmic rays which could damage our DNA as sharp solar winds threaten to “strip away our planet’s atmosphere and oceans”.

The effects of a weaken magnetic field is a serious issue that shouldn’t be ignored. It’s also important to keep in mind that pole reversals are always accompanied by a disappearance of the magnetic field. The last such reversal took place 780 000 years ago.

The magnetic field can also undergo excursions, periods when the field suddenly drops as if it was going to reverse, before recovering its normal polarity. About 41,000 years ago, Earth’s magnetic field vanished. This event is known as the Laschamp Excursion.
