Fastest Wind Ever Coming From A Disk Around Stellar-Mass Black Hole Discovered

21 February, 2012

MessageToEagle.com - This record breaking wind is moving about 20 million miles per hour - about 3% the speed of light and may be carrying away much more material than the black hole is actually capturing.

This is nearly ten times faster than had ever been seen from a stellar-mass black hole, and matches some of the fastest winds generated by supermassive black holes, objects millions or billions of times more massive.

Stellar-mass black holes are born when extremely massive stars collapse and typically weigh between five and 10 times the mass of the Sun.

Scientists also found that the wind, which comes from a disk of gas surrounding the black hole, may be carrying away much more material than the black hole is capturing.

The high speed for the wind was estimated from a spectrum made by Chandra in 2011.

This artist's impression shows a binary system containing a stellar-mass black hole called IGR J17091-3624, or IGR J17091 for short.
The strong gravity of the black hole, on the left, is pulling gas away from a companion star on the right. This gas forms a disk of hot gas around the black hole, and the wind is driven off this disk.Credit: Illustration: NASA/CXC/M.Weiss

A spectrum shows how intense the X-rays are at different energies. Ions emit and absorb distinct features in spectra, which allow scientists to monitor them and their behavior.

A Chandra spectrum of iron ions made two months earlier showed no evidence of the high-speed wind, meaning the wind likely turns on and off over time.

Mysterious "Humming" At The Center Of The Milky Way Remains Of Unknown Origin
There is no shortage of extraordinary phenomena in space.
Our Universe is filled with things we cannot yet understand and explain.
Scientists have just discovered a strange humming sound at the center of our galaxy and a cloud traveling close to the speed of light.
Compared to the rest of the galaxy, the emission is really peculiar because it differs in many ways. What could possibly generate it?

Most Alien World We Can Only Imagine
This is not an alien world, anyone of us will ever be able to visit. It's not very far away, only about 40 light years from Earth, but it circles dangerously close to a stellar inferno, completing one orbit in only 18 hours. The alien planet named "55 Cancri e" is 26 times closer to its parent star than Mercury is to the Sun. The temperature on the surface of 55 Cancri e is estimated to be as high as 2,700 degrees Celsius.

The pulse timing of this object is considered unusual. What kind of phenomenon is related to this object? It is the first time this kind of phenomenon has been observed by astronomers.

The "Cloaked" Star Was Difficult To Find
An object obscured by dust, and buried in a two-star system enshrouded by dense gas, is not easy to find.
A "cloaked" star was discovered after it ate a little of its neighbor. The meal must have given the star a bit of indigestion, because it "burped" with a blast of high-energy radiation, which gave it away.

Invader From Another Galaxy
This alien intruder from another galaxy is in many ways different from other exoplanets observed by astronomers.
Located about 2000 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation of Fornax (the Furnace), the Jupiter-like planet orbits a dying star of extragalactic origin and risks to be engulfed by it.

"Pillars Of Creation" Are Gone
Every time you look at the beautiful and famous image of the Pillars of Creation taken by Hubble back in 1995, you are actually admiring something that no longer exists.
In fact, the Pillars of Creation were already long gone by the time the image was captured!
