Huge Active Fault Found Directly Under Mount Fuji
It Can Trigger Strong Earthquake

14 May, 2012

MessageToEagle.com - Acccording to recent survey, a huge active fault was found under Mount Fuji, standing at 3,776 meters (12,385 feet) above sea level.

The fault, about 30 kilometers long, extends from just beneath the surface to a depth of about 5 km.

Mount Fuji, the highest and the nearly perfectly shaped peak in Japan, has been worshipped as a sacred mountain.

The dangerous fault can trigger a magnitude-7 earthquake, close to a volcano, changing the shape of the mountain and destroying nearby communities.

If an earthquake strikes along a fault line close to a volcano, such as Mount Fuji, it could cause large-scale landslides called "sector collapse."

These slides often transform into debris avalanches and the so-called lahars that can devastate populations downstream of the volcano.

In 2011, the scientists studied seismic waves and other clues to estimate underground structures beneath a region that spreads to the west of the fault zone and around Mount Fuji.

Now, the presence of a fault-like structure stretching from beneath the eastern foot of Mount Fuji to directly beneath the volcanic mountain has been confirmed.

The scientists do not know exactly when the next collapse will take place but the risks of such disaster must be taken into account.

The fault is likely to have been active during the past million years and has the potential to generate magnitude-7 class earthquakes, the scientists said.

At least five sector collapse events have taken place on Mount Fuji during the last 100,000 years or so. The latest occurred between 2,500 and 2,900 years ago.

For now, "no activity records or the precise scale of the fault are available at the current stage," said team member Hiroshi Sato, a professor of structural geology at the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo. However, in this situation a series of excavations and even other surveys are necessary.

A magnitude-9 earthquake and massive tsunami hit northern Japan last year, leaving nearly 19,000 people dead or missing and causing the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years.
An earthquake in 1707 caused Fuji to erupt and killed an estimated 20,000 people.

The eruptions from 1707-1708 occurred from the Hoei Craters on the southeast flank of the mountain. The explosive eruption ejected 850 million cubic meters of ash and effectively blocked out the sun in southern Kanto. No deaths occurred which are linked to this eruption, however, numerous residents were unable to acquire food after the devastation and died of starvation.

The 1707 eruption lasted 16 days and combined with a fissure eruption, created a mudflow resulting in overflowing rivers and leaving rice fields barren for the following 100 years. Such was the extent of the eruption that even Tokyo (60miles/96km away) was sprinkled with ash.

Latest Spectacular Solar Flare Will Hit STEREO-B Spacecraft, Spitzer And Curiosity

The Sun continues to show its more violent side. A spectacular solar flare erupted from the Sun's northeastern limb yesterday, sending an beautiful arcing jet of super-heated plasma blasting off into space. The explosion, captured by Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory at about 5.45pm yesterday evening, was one of the most beautiful seen in years.

Something New Spotted On The Sun

One day in the fall of 2011, Neil Sheeley, a solar scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., did what he always does – look through the daily images of the sun from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). But on this day he saw something he'd never noticed before: a pattern of cells with bright centers and dark boundaries occurring in the sun's atmosphere, the corona...

The only places where mid-ocean ridges appear above sea level are Ethiopia and Iceland. Two new studies into the so-called “plumbing systems” that lie under volcanoes could bring scientists closer to predicting large eruptions and reveal new information about where magma is stored and how it moves through the geological plumbing network.
