Extreme Weather:
Rare Supercell Thunderstorm Produces Monster Hailstone

28 March, 2012

MessageToEagle.com - Just recently scientists announced they found new evidence linking Earth's extreme weather to human-caused global warming.

Now, the National Weather Service office in Honoulu in coordination with the State Climate Extremes Committee has confirmed that a rare supercell thunderstorm has produced new state hail size record.

Supercell thunderstorms are a special kind of single cell thunderstorm that can persist for many hours.

They are responsible for nearly all of the significant tornadoes produced in the U.S. and for most of the hailstones larger than golf ball size. Supercells are also known to produce extreme winds and flash flooding.

Supercells are highly organized storms characterized updrafts that can attain speeds over 100 miles per hour, able to produce extremely large hail and strong and/or violent tornadoes, downdrafts that can produce damaging outflow winds in excess of 100 mph - all of which pose a high threat to life and property.

Supercell thunderstorms are common in the central plains of the United States, but almost unheard of in Hawaii.

During the early morning hours of March 9th, 2012 a supercell thunderstorm parked itself over Windward Oahu and produced large hail that fell into both Kaneohe and Kailua. Numerous reports of 2 to 3 inch plus diameter hail were reported.

The National Weather Service investigated a hail stone reportedly larger than 3 inches in diameter which was collected by a windward resident in the Aikahi Neighborhood. Upon inspecting the hailstone it was apparent the stone was much larger than 3 inches.

This is a photo of the largest hailstone that fell during the March 9th storm in Kaneohe, HI. We verified the 4.25" diameter hail which has been confirmed by the state climate extremes committee and officially sets the state record for Hawaii.

The final measurement of the hailstone was 4 and ¼ inches long, 2 and ¼ inches tall, and 2 inches wide. According to hail report records for Hawaii kept back to 1950 the previous state record hailstone was 1 inch in diameter.

According to NOAA, large hailstones can fall at speeds faster than 100 miles (160 kilometers) per hour. They can sometimes contain foreign matter, such as pebbles, leaves, twigs, nuts, and insects, but this not happen in Hawaii this time.

New Evidence Links Earth's Extreme Weather To Human-Caused Global Warming
The past decade has been one of unprecedented weather extremes. Scientists of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany argue that the high incidence of extremes is not merely accidental. From the many single events a pattern emerges. At least for extreme rainfall and heat waves the link with human-caused global warming is clear...
