Is God A Manifestation Of The Laws Of Physics In The Universe?

Cynthia McKanzie – MessageToEagle.com – Billions of people believe in God and miracles are often credited to God. Scientists try to find a scientific explanation for all types of supernatural events, but that’s not always possible because current understanding of the laws of nature can occasionally be insufficient.

Most think that science and the supernatural are often incompatible, but why not appreciate the beauty of science and enigmas of our world? As Albert Einstein once said: “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.”

Many scientists do believe in God and there is no reason to say that science and religion can not co-exist peacefully. We may find scientific answers to some supernatural events, and perhaps some mysteries are better left unsolved.

Speaking to Penguin books recently, American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explained that science can explain many miracles, but this doesn’t necessarily imply God doesn’t exist. Tyson simply refused to rule out the possibility of there being a God.

“I don’t know if God exists, deeply religious people are certain he exists – he, or it – but there are ardent atheists who are sure God does not exist too.

My posture is, particularly in the monotheistic traditions, that God is typically described as being all-knowing, all-powerful and all good.

Yet, I look back through history and, in particular, the earthquake of in Lisbon, in 1755, 80,000 people died. That earthquake took place on All Saints Day, in the morning, when most people in Lisbon – the holiest city in Europe – were in church.

Churches were the largest structures of the day, if you have an earthquake what’s the first building to collapse? The ones that are the largest, most susceptible, so people died in churches,” Tyson said.

Can God Be A Manifestation Of The Laws Of Physics In The Universe?

We have seen on many occasions that physics, especially quantum physics tends to turn our understanding of the world and cosmos up-side-down. It would be ignorant to say we possess sufficient knowledge of the laws of physics, as our modern society is still struggling to solve some of the greatest mysteries of cosmos. We do not have all the answers and there are plenty of scientific riddles we may or may not solve in the future.

Tyson brought up an interesting idea that other scientists and ordinary people have already wondered. Could God be a manifestation of the laws of physics?

As mentioned in one of our articles, ancient and modern scientists have suggested that God has the mind of a mathematician.

According to the mathematical Universe hypothesis, all structures that exist mathematically also exist physically.

“If you believe in an external reality independent of humans, then you must also believe in what I call the mathematical universe hypothesis: that our physical reality is a mathematical structure.

In other words, we all live in a gigantic mathematical object- one that is more elaborate than a dodecahedron, and probably also more complex than objects […] which appear in today’s most advanced theories. Everything in our world is purely mathematical – including you,” Max Tegmark, Professor of Physics says.

So, assuming for one moment this theory is credible, one can also if God is familiar not only with mathematics but also the laws of physics.

“So I take issue with what many people say God is, but there are other ways to think about God, maybe he’s the manifestation of the laws of physics in the universe, “ Tyson said.

Physicist Michio Kaku said we “can neither prove nor disprove the existence of God.”

“Science is based on what is testable, reproducible, and falsifiable,” Kaku added. “That’s called ‘science.’ However, there are certain things that are not testable, not reproducible, and not falsifiable. And that would include the existence of God.”

Peoples’ understanding of God may vary. Some see God as an individual, while others believe in a god-like force that is present in the Universe.

“When scientists use the word God, they usually mean the God of Order. For example, one of the most important revelations in Einstein’s early childhood took place when he read his first books on science. He immediately realized that most of what he had been taught about religion could not possibly be true. Throughout his career, however, he clung to the belief that a mysterious, divine Order existed in the universe,” Kaku explained.

Paul Davies, a physicist and Professor at Arizona State University has a different approach to the subject. He says that he doesn’t mind if we call the underlying laws of physics “God.” But God is not above the laws of nature. They themselves are the ultimate “bedrock reality.”

“The origin of life and consciousness were … I believe, part of the natural outworking of the laws of nature, and as such, our existence as conscious enquiring beings springs ultimately from the bedrock of physical existence—those ingenious and felicitous laws, “Davies said.

God can indeed be a manifestation of the laws of physics, but it’s just speculation and nothing has been proven.

We can also see this as Tyson once said – “We are part of this universe; we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts, is that the universe is in us.”
