In 1943, an ancient papyrus was bought by the Cairo museum.
It was written in Hieratic and although portions of it were eaten away by ants, it was a very precious ancient document.
The papyrus contained three separate books dealing with astronomy. One of the books was the Cairo Calendar, and now it reveals an ancient astronomical secret.
Algol, also known as the Demon Star, is a binary star in the Perseus constellation. For hundreds of years the star has been an object of speculation.
A research team from Finland is now suggesting that ancient Egyptians were familiar with the Demon Star and its odd behavior already 3200 years ago!
The period of the binary star Algol, was 2.850 days three millennia ago.
For religious reasons, the ancient Egyptians have recorded this period into the Cairo Calendar, which describes the repetitive changes of the Raging one.
Cairo Calendar may be the oldest preserved historical document of the discovery of a variable star!
Ancient Egyptian scribes wrote Calendars of Lucky and Unlucky Days that assigned good and bad prognoses for the days of the year.
The prognoses were based on mythological and astronomical events considered influential for everyday life.
The best preserved calendar is the Cairo Calendar (hereafter CC) in papyrus Cairo 86637 dated to 1271-1163 B.C.
Algol is remarkable in many ways.
It seemed to defy the general rule of astrophysics that more massive stars evolve faster, because the more massive Algol A has not evolved
away from the main sequence, but the less massive Algol B has already evolved to the subgiant stage.

This famous "Algol paradox" was finally resolved only about half a century ago. Algol A was less massive than Algol B when this system was formed.
Algol brightens and dims every 2.867 days, a phenomenon first described in semi-modern western astronomy by John Goodricke, who wrote
about what he saw with the naked eye back in 1783.
Although it is highly unlikely the ancient Egyptians could have known that the dimming was caused by one of the binary stars
passing in front of the other, they recorded Algol's unusual activity on regular basis. The Demon Star's movements were described
in the Cairo Calendar that has managed to survive over the thousands of years.
Ancient Egyptians were highly sophisticated astronomers who possessed knowledge that inspired them in their daily lives.
Astronomical alignments also played a very important role in the orientation of ancient Egyptian temples.

Mysteries Of The Sun Explained In Video
Are you curious about the Sun? You now have an excellent chance to learn everything you ever wanted, and even more about our Sun and all its mysteries.
Five new videos called "Mysteries of the Sun" have been just released by NASA.
The videos describe the science of the sun and its effects on the solar system and Earth.
Big Bang Machine Discovers Unknown Particle
Physicists at Cern have not yet been able to confirm the existence of
the elusive "God particle", but they have nevertheless made another interesting discovery
Scientists announced that the Large Hadron Collider, often referred to as the Big Bang machine has detected an unknown particle composed of three quarks.
Earth-Like Exoplanet In The Habitable Zone Could Harbor Life
- Has Earth Twin Been Discovered?
It is every astronomers' dream to find an Earth-like with liquid water and perfect conditions for life, as we know it.
This is why the recent discovery is so exciting.
An international group of astronomers have detected a new exoplanet that appears to be very similar to Earth. Could life exist there?
A New Riddle To Ponder:
'Dark Halo' Reveals An Astronomical Surprise
Surprisingly, some of the oldest galaxies in the Universe have three times more stellar mass, and so many more stars, than
all current models of galaxy evolution predict.
A new finding made by the Atlas3D international team, led by an Oxford University scientist, helped to find a way to remove
the 'halo' of dark matter that has clouded previous calculations.
Mysterious Monolith At Gardom's Edge Was An Ancient Astronomical Calendar
Scientists have now reason to think that an ancient 4000-year-old stone monolith in England was likely an astronomical calendar, according to new archaeological evidence.
The 2.2 metre high monument, located in the Peak District National Park, has a striking, right-angled triangular shape that slants up towards geographic south.
The orientation and inclination of the slope is aligned to the altitude of the Sun at mid-summer.
Something New Spotted On The Sun
One day in the fall of 2011, Neil Sheeley, a solar scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., did what he always does –
look through the daily images of the sun from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).
But on this day he saw something he'd never noticed before: a pattern of cells with bright centers and dark boundaries occurring in the sun's atmosphere, the corona...
Hidden Misshapen Celestial "Wonder"
It is one of the brightest and strangest objects in the Milky Way - the corpse of a star that exploded around 1000 years ago.
Only a handful of such young supernova remnants are known.
The object named G350.1-0.3 is also incredibly small (only eight light years across) and young in astronomical terms.
Ground-Breaking Discovery Suggests
Gravity May Not Be A Fundamental Force Of Nature
Can information really escape from a black hole? According to new research it seems to be possible for something to actually escape from a black hole.
If correct, the results are ground-breaking suggesting that gravity may not be a fundamental force of Nature after all!
