Mysterious Giant Ancient Network Of Underground Caves Discovered Beneath Montreal

MessageToEagle.com – About 30 feet beneath the city of Montreal, Canada explores have discovered a vast, mysterious network of underground caves.

The secret subterranean passages are estimated to have been created 15,000 years ago dating back to the Earth’s last Ice Age. The cave system was formed through glaciotectonics.

The ancient caves, which stretch about 650 feet, were discovered past a fissure at the end of a cave originally discovered in 1812, located under a city park.

About 3,000 visitors travel to the original cave every year and have done so since the 1980s. No-one suspected there is much more around the cave known as the St Léonard cavern, except for Luc Le Blanc and Daniel Caron, two curious amateur explorers who decided to take a closer look at the cave system.

In October, when a softer layer of the rock gave way, they were able to drill and chisel a window through the limestone. “We could then see there was indeed a void and it was bigger than we thought,” Le Blanc said.

What they had found was an underground chamber about six meters in height, three meters wide and steeped in water. “It’s perfectly silent,” Le Blanc said. “The water is not moving. It’s not a river, it’s the water table.”

The walls of the caves are made of limestone and the passages are full of fossils.  “The walls are perfectly smooth, perfectly vertical and the ceiling is a perfectly horizontal slab,” Le Blanc said.

The size of the cave system is still unknown, and the ultimate goal is to find out how far the cave system reaches.  So, the next step is to find the cave’s end, which Le Blanc thinks will be easier in the winter, when the water level should drop.
