Actually, the word scientist is not very old. It was coined by Cambridge University philosopher and historian William Whewell (1794–1866) in 1833. William Whewell who was one of the most influential figures in nineteenth-century Britain wanted to replace to replace such terms as “cultivators of science” with something better.
The term was first published in Whewell’s anonymous 1834 review of Mary Somerville’s On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences published in the Quarterly Review.
