Are Viruses Falling From The Sky A Threat To Earth?

Cynthia McKanzie – MessageToEagle.com – Have you ever thought about how many dangerous viruses could be circulating around the Earth’s atmosphere right now? Can viruses falling from the sky be a real threat to life on our world?

Those who have studied the issue say there is an incredible number of viruses in the atmosphere, and many of them can cover vast distances, and even migrate between continents.

Dr. Curtis Suttle from the University of British Columbia who works as a virologist explained that “every day, more than 800 million viruses are deposited per square meter above the planetary boundary layer—that’s 25 viruses for each person in Canada.”

Viruses are extremely dangerous. When a host cell is infected, it I forced to produce thousands of identical copies of the original virus. The process takes place at an extraordinary rate. When these viruses start to spread over vast distances, they become a real issue science must deal with.

Dr. Suffle explained that about 20 years ago researchers noticed the appearance of  genetically similar viruses occurring in very different environments around the globe. Where did they come from and why were they almost identical? Everything indicates that they came from space.

“This preponderance of long-residence viruses travelling the atmosphere likely explains why—it’s quite conceivable to have a virus swept up into the atmosphere on one continent and deposited on another,” Dr. Suffle said.

Dr. Suffle and his team discovered that the deposition rates for viruses 9 to 461 times greater than the rates for bacteria. The study concludes that billions of viruses and tens of millions of bacteria are being deposited per square meter on daily basis.

Since we don’t know the nature of most of them, it’s extremely difficult to speculate how dangerous they can be to life on our planet. Some of these viruses could have originated in space.

Portland State University biology Professor Ken Stedman who has investigated the possibility of viruses “living” in space thinks astronomers should broaden their cosmic search for life by looking for viruses in space. Even if many viruses are threatening, they can also play a major role in the creation of life.

“Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on modern Earth. They are highly diverse both in structure and genomic sequence, play critical roles in evolution, strongly influence terran biogeochemistry, and are believed to have played important roles in the origin and evolution of life,” authors of the study write in the paper.
