Haunted Hotels Around The World

What better hotel to start our list with than the inspiration behind Stephen King’s best-selling novel ‘The Shining’? The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado originally opened in 1909 as a resort for the upper class as well as a health retreat for tuberculosis patients – an odd combination, we know.

Countless guests have encountered paranormal activity including unexplained voices, playing pianos, and doors shutting. The hotel management fully commits to its reputation by offering ghost hunts and late-night strolls through the hotel grounds. Book your stay on one of the best travel websites list Travelistes.com. Room 217, which was featured prominently in the novel, remains to be one of the Stanley’s most requested rooms.

Russell Hotel In The Rocks – Sydney, Australia

Haunted Hotels Around The World

Situated in one of Sydney’s oldest neighborhoods and surrounded by popular things to see and do, the Russell Hotel is its very own attraction. In its early days, it was often visited by rowdy seamen who docked there and was later used as a temporary hospital during a bubonic plague outbreak. Legend has it that a sailor stayed back and still resides in Room 8; he is often seen looking out of his window on to the surroundings. Guests usually say that they can hear someone walking over creaky floors inside their room.

Toftaholm Herrgard – Lagan, Sweden

Haunted Hotels Around The World

Though it’s now a five-star hotel, Toftaholm Herrgard was once the private residence of a wealthy baron. It has a sad history comprising the suicide of a young man who killed himself in what is now Room 324. The baron refused the love between his daughter and the gentleman and did not allow them to get married, which lead to the young man committing suicide from his sadness. Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum - Massachusetts, USA

One of the most famous murders of the 19th century was that surrounding Lizzie Borden – there’s even a popular nursery rhyme! The story is that Lizzie killed her father and her stepmother with an ax in their family home. It’s that exact family home that has now been converted to a bed and breakfast as well as a museum dedicated to the victims as well as the suspected killer. The First World Hotel – Genting Islands, Malaysia

Haunted Hotels Around The World

One of the largest hotels in the world, The First World Hotel is renowned for its many amenities and facilities. Set atop Malaysia’s Titiwangsa Mountains, the hotel boasts of an exciting theme park on the grounds, its very own tropical rainforest, and one of the biggest casinos in Southeast Asia. As a matter of fact, it’s that very casino that has been the source of the hotel’s common paranormal activities. Their reputation took a turn for the spooky when it became common for gamblers who’ve lost everything to commit suicide by jumping off the higher floors of the hotel. Guests say their restless souls haunt the hotel and that you can hear them crying in the middle of the night.

Taj Mahal Palace – Mumbai, India

Taj Mahal Palace - Mumbai, India

The Taj Mahal itself is a landmark structure that has an appalling past of its own. Ironically, the Taj Mahal Palace hotel followed with its very own history of horror. The magnificent structure was designed by architect W.A. Chambers who was very proud of his creation. So it’s understandable how upset he became when he returned to India to find that the palace had been built in the direction opposite to his blueprints. Completely disheartened by the oversight, Chambers committed suicide by jumping off of the 5th floor of the hotel. His ghost is said to have haunted the Old Wing ever since.

The Langham Hotel – London, United Kingdom

Haunted Hotels Around The World

Room 333 in The Langham Hotel is considered to be the most haunted hotel in all of London. Built in 1865, it was London’s “first grand hotel” and it attracted guests from all over the world. Sadly, over the years, it also became the place of several suicides and murders. For example, a German prince jumped out of a 4th floor window and a doctor killed his wife and then himself while on their honeymoon. Till today, guests have heard ghostly moans and shrieks in the middle of the night.
