Mysterious Structure Discovered In Earth’s Inner Core Can Re-Write Science Textbooks

Cynthia McKanzie -MessageToEagle.om – Researchers have discovered a mysterious structure in Earth’s Inner core. Based on what is known at this time it’s clear the existence of this unknown structure points to an unknown, dramatic event in our planet’s history.

This is a major finding because knowledge of our planet’s interior is still limited. Every new discovery is significant since Earth’s inner core is responsible for the generation of Earth’s magnetic field. By studying the inner core, we also gain information regarding the earliest history of accretion of the planet. Scientists have previously discovered waves emitted in Earth’s inner core cause anomalies in the magnetic field.

The Earth’s magnetic field experiences unpredictable, rapid, and intense anomalies are known as geomagnetic jerks. The mechanisms behind this phenomenon had remained a mystery until the recent research.

Researchers at the Australian National University (ANU) have also found proof that the inner core is solid. Now the scientists from ANU report we may have to re-write our scientific knowledge of inner Earth.

By confirming the existence of the Earth’s “innermost inner core” researchers have moved one step closer to understanding the past of our planet. By investigating the structure of the inner core, we can get a more comprehensive picture of Earth’s history and evolution.

According to Ph.D. researcher Joanne Stephenson, lead author of the study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, this new layer is difficult to observe, but studies reveal its distinct properties may point to an unknown, dramatic event in the Earth’s history.

“Traditionally we’ve been taught the Earth has four main layers: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core.

The idea of another distinct layer was proposed a couple of decades ago, but the data has been very unclear.

We got around this by using a very clever search algorithm to trawl through thousands of the models of the inner core.

It’s very exciting – and might mean we have to re-write the textbooks!”

So, yes, Jules Verne’s famous novel may need a couple of extra pages of his famous novel A Journey to the Centre of the Earth.  Widely regarded as the father of science fiction, Jules Verne was certainly a man ahead of his time who predicted the future.
