Our Universe Is Conscious – Panpsychism Theory Suggests
Cynthia McKanzie – MessageToEagle.com – Have you ever heard of the panpsychism theory? Many haven’t, but it’s a very interesting theory that suggests our entire Universe may be conscious. The theory is attracting more and more scientists who say it’s very likely our Universe is “alive” in ways we haven’t considered before.
Ancient Thinkers Discussed The Panpsychism Theory
The word, ‘Panpsychism’ was coined by the Italian philosopher Francesco Patrizi in the sixteenth century, and derives from the two Greek words pan (all) and psyche (soul or mind). Readers interested in religion, philosophy and spirituality will find that the Panpsychism theory is very similar to what the Hindus and Buddhists call the Brahman and the concepts reflect several spiritual thoughts.
Supporters of the panpsychism theory say that consciousness is a fundamental part of matter. This means that the entire universe is inhabited by consciousness.
Panpsychism is not a new invention. Ancient thinkers such as for example Plato, Thales of Miletus, Leibnitz, Spinoza and genius Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who laid down the intellectual foundations for the Age of Enlightenment, argued for panpsychism. It is only recently that modern scientists have re-discovered this fascinating theory and are trying to grasp it. It’s not easy considering we still cannot agree on a common definition of consciousness.
How Can Consciousness Be Part Of The Universe?
For millennia, philosophers have struggled to define human consciousness. What does it mean to be human? How does the human brain generate our subjective experiences? What is it that causes us to be aware of our existence?
Explaining the nature of consciousness is one of the most important and perplexing areas of philosophy, and locating regions of the brain that may play a role maintaining it, is very difficult. Some scientists connect consciousness to the mind, confusing it with self-awareness, whereas others recognize that these elements are all interconnected.
As previously mentioned on MessageToEagle.com, a while back scientists reported they may have located the physical source of consciousness in the brain.
Other researchers have suggested that the unconscious mind is a shadow of the “real” conscious mind and we might possess a second hidden intelligence.
The scientific problem we face is that it’s unknown how gray matter generates consciousness. Many strange cases have been reported. For example, the theory of consciousness was challenged by man who misses most of his brain and still exhibits normal behavior.
Consciousness remains an unsolved science mystery, but we can still speculate.
Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882-1944), a famous English astronomer, physicist, and mathematician said that all matter had some form of “mind stuff”. According to Sir Eddington, “the mind-stuff of the world is, of course, something more general than our individual conscious minds… The mind-stuff is not spread in space and time; these are part of the cyclic scheme ultimately derived out of it…

It is necessary to keep reminding ourselves that all knowledge of our environment from which the world of physics is constructed, has entered in the form of messages transmitted along the nerves to the seat of consciousness… Consciousness is not sharply defined but fades into subconsciousness, and beyond that, we must postulate something indefinite but yet continuous with our mental nature… It is difficult for the matter-of-fact physicist to accept the view that the substratum of everything is of mental character. But no one can deny that mind is the first and most direct thing in our experience, and all else is remote inference.”
It has been suggested, by for example Philip Goff, Associate Professor in Philosophy at Central European University in Budapest, and author of Consciousness and Fundamental Reality that panpsychism may explain “the complex consciousness of humans and other animals in terms of simpler forms of consciousness which are postulated to already exist in simpler forms of matter.”
Sir Roger Penrose, an English mathematical physicist, mathematician and philosopher of science have suggested that consciousness is present at the quantum level and resides in the synapses of the brain.
“The laws of physics produce complex systems, and these complex systems lead to consciousness, which then produces mathematics, which can then encode in a succinct and inspiring way the very underlying laws of physics that gave rise to it,” Sir Penrose explained.
Other scientists have proposed that consciousness is a manifestation with a real, physical location, somewhere in the universe. We just haven’t found this location yet.
If consciousness is a fundamental part of matter then the Universe is consciousness. These are interesting thoughts, yet undoubtedly the theory is very difficult to prove.
