Temples were built to house a sacred symbol of a particular god.

All of them have beautiful, precise and harmonious geometry and many of them are richly decorated with sculptures of gods, animals, erotic scenes, flowers, geometric patterns and other figures bringing the memory of mythological episodes.

Gopurams (elaborate gate towers) are dominant architectural feature of a temple’s outer appearance, sometimes soaring as high as 170 feet and completely overshadowing the main shrine and other structures of the temple, due to their colossal size.

Elongated towers (Dravida towers) in Indian Hindu temples are called vimanas, more dome-like with cornices, and they are topped by another smaller dome. The exterior walls of Dravida temples have regular entablatures which often contain sculpture.

The towers symbolize power and connection between the human world on earth and the abode of gods and goddesses in high heavens.
