There are many stunning structures, people and intriguing events in Game of Thrones. Some could be real and some not. Before you start speculating and attempting to distinguish facts from fantasies it may be a good idea to have some solid scientific knowledge, so you know what you talk about when you discuss the subject with your friends or family.
For example, the giant ice wall in Game of Thrones. Forget that it was constructed by magic and some ancient spells were involved in this creation. Let’s focus on the wall’s physical structure instead. Can a huge ice wall like the one in Game of Thrones really exist on Earth?
The Wall, over 700 feet tall is made of solid ice and stretches for 100 leagues (300 miles) along the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms. It separates the realm from the domain of the wild beings who live beyond.

According to scientists, a giant ice wall like this one cannot exist on our planet. It’s simply not realistic, because, without magic, such a barrier would fall rapidly. Professor Martin Truffer from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, who is a science fiction and fantasy fan, said the ice wall from Game of Thrones is nothing something we can find on our planet. Sheer ice cliffs of 700 feet simply don’t exist in nature. Professor Truffer said that a 300-foot cliff is extreme even for glaciers that regular calve ice into the ocean.
“Ice deforms under its own weight, and 700 feet is a lot of weight. That’s way more stress than the ice would be under in the Antarctic ice sheet” Professor Truffer said.
If the laws of nature applied, then ice cliffs and the wall would share the same Achilles’ heel — differential pressure. He explained that the ice wall would be under tremendous pressure, while the air next to it would not.

“If you have atmosphere next to ice with a 700-foot load on it, that ice would flow out like butter,” he said. “The ice would flow out faster than you could put the next ice block on.”
There is one possibility, but it’s not a good thing for living creatures. Professor Truffer explained that the ice wall in “Games of Thrones” might stand a better chance if gentle slopes of ice buttressed it, but then this would make it easier for dangerous creatures to climb the wall.
So, now we know that a huge ice wall like the one in Game of Thrones cannot exist on our planet. It’s always good to have some scientific background, but the fact that this particular ice wall cannot be real won’t prevent us from enjoying Game of Thrones.
